Freshfields Adds Three to U.S. M&A Practice

Dec. 4, 2019, 6:40 PM

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer is expanding its U.S. corporate practice at a rapid clip, announcing that it has hired three more attorneys from Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton.

The three, who will be counsel at the firm, follow Freshfields’ nabbing last month of Ethan Klingsberg, also from Cleary, as it positions itself to be among the top U.S. dealmaking advisers.

The newest additions are Andrea Basham, Elizabeth Bieber and Zheng Zhou, who will work in New York. Cleary associate Chase Lax will also join Freshfields, according to the firm.

The hires are part of Freshfields’ long-term strategy to expand its capacity to handle U.S. deals, Freshfields Global Senior partner Edward Braham told Bloomberg when Klingsberg came board.

According to Bloomberg data, Freshfields ranked 14th this year among law firms handling M&A transactions, for a total of more than $205 billion. Cleary Gottlieb ranked No. 7, with 67 transactions that amounted to $281 billion.

Freshfields has been building its U.S. team in recent years through hires from major firms. It has also picked up Meredith Kotler, a shareholder litigation partner, Pam Marcogliese, a corporate governance partner and Paul Tiger, another M&A partner—for a total of 10 partners dedicated to M&A.
