Former Justice Department Attorney Returns to King & Spalding

King & Spalding is welcoming back Matt Baughman, a former Justice Department associate deputy attorney general, as a partner in its Atlanta office.

Baughman, who had been a partner before his stint as a prosecutor, will join the firm’s special matters and government investigations team.

At Justice, Baughman oversaw white collar enforcement, including cases arising from the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and False Claims Act as well as healthcare fraud, securities and financial fraud.

As chair of the department’s Corporate Enforcement and Accountability Working Group, he implemented new policies including those related to corporate cooperation in criminal and civil cases, individual accountability in corporate investigations, and coordinating fines and penalties.

In his new job, which is part of the firm’s Government Matters practice group, he will apply his experience on behalf of corporate clients facing government investigations.

“Matt will work closely with companies, boards and special committees to respond to cases that question their businesses practices and their behavior,” Josh Kamin, managing partner of King & Spalding’s Atlanta office said, in a statement.

Baughman, who had focused on crisis management, government and other investigations and litigation in his prior time at the firm, also has worked at the Securities and Exchange Commission where he was in charge of investigations of publicly traded companies, broker-dealers, investment advisers, investment companies, and other regulated entities.
