Former DOJ Tax Head, Morgan Lewis Partner Joins Boutique Firm

Morgan Lewis & Bockius partner and the former head of the Department of Justice’s Tax Division Nathan Hochman has joined litigation boutique Browne George Ross as a partner in its Century City, Calif. office.

Hochman was nominated by President George W. Bush and became assistant attorney general in 2008 where he led the enforcement of the nation’s tax laws through both criminal and civil litigation.

In 2009, he joined the now-defunct Bingham McCutchen as a litigation partner in its office in Santa Monica, Calif. Hochman joined Morgan Lewis in 2014 when Bingham McCutchen combined with the Philadelphia-based firm.

Prior to joining the Justice Department Hochman was principal at Hochman, Salkin, Rettig, Toscher & Perez from 1997 until 2008 where he worked with individuals and organizations in tax litigation and controversies and federal and state white collar criminal litigation.

He also served as assistant U.S. attorney for the Central District of California where he prosecuted over 180 cases in the government fraud and public corruption section, ranging from tax violations to bank and loan fraud.

Hochman was not immediately available for comment regarding his move to the firm.

Browne George Ross was founded in 1985 with an specific focus on business litigation and has a presence in California and on the East Coast.

Its partners have represented several high-profile clients including actor Amber Heard in her defamation suit against ex-husband Johnny Depp. Browne George Ross also recently took on notable attorney and Trump foe Michael Avenatti in a years-long dispute between Avenatti and a former employee of his law firm, Jason Frank.
