Florida Faces ‘Daunting’ Backlog of Pending Cases Due to Virus

Florida’s trial courts face a backlog of over 1 million pending cases delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the chief justice of the state supreme court told lawmakers on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, innovations such as holding hearings via video conferencing initiated because of courthouse closures have proven popular among attorneys and litigants.

“Remote proceedings are here to stay,” Chief Justice Charles Canady said in a presentation to the Florida House Judiciary Committee.
