FISA Court Adviser Warns About ‘Overly Broad’ Spy Bill Language

An adviser to the secret court that oversees a powerful spy authority is warning that a House-passed reauthorization of the contentious law contains “overly broad” language.

Lawmakers on Friday voted 273-147 to pass a two-year reauthorization (H.R. 7888) of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, ahead of a meeting that day between House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

The bill includes an amendment from House Intelligence Chairman Mike Turner (R-Ohio) and ranking member Reps. Jim Himes (D-Conn.) that would expand certain search powers in a bid to “remedy a serious intelligence loophole.”
