First Circuit’s First Woman Stepping Down, New Vacancy for Biden

Sandra Lynch, the first woman appointed to the Boston-based federal appeals court when she replaced Stephen Breyer, will step down as an active judge upon the confirmation of her successor.

Lynch, of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, informed President Joe Biden of her plans to take a form of semi-retirement afforded to judges known as senior status in a Tuesday letter.

“It has been and will continue to be an honor to serve my country as a judicial officer,” Lynch wrote.

Biden now has three expected vacancies to fill on the First Circuit.
