Ex-Police Union Leader Fails in Appeal for More Pension Benefits

A former police union president can’t have each aspect of his past compensation as an officer included in his pension, a California appeals court ruled.

The types of special compensation Gerry Serrano seeks to include in his pension don’t fit under the definition of “compensation earnable” for pension purposes under the state’s Public Employees’ Retirement Law, according to an opinion Wednesday. California’s Court of Appeal for the Third Appellate District affirmed a state superior court’s judgment in favor of the California Public Employees’ Retirement System.
