An off-duty deputy sheriff who fired five shots at woman who was berating him with expletives, refusing to follow directions, and reaching behind her back is immune from her excessive force and free speech claims, the Fifth Circuit said Wednesday.

Brandon Doege worked for the Bexar County, Texas, sheriff’s office at its adult detention center. He was on his way home one night when he came upon Inessa Batyukova’s car stopped in the middle of the road with its lights flashing.
