Democrats Sue Over North Carolina Dumping Early-Vote Saturday

The North Carolina Democratic Party filed a lawsuit on Monday, seeking to force the state to restore what had been a busy day for early voting.

The suit claims that a state law removing the Saturday before election day as an early-voting option unconstitutionally restricted free speech and elections.

The North Carolina statute at issue (Session Law 2018-112) was enacted in June 2018 by the Republican-controlled Legislature over the veto of Gov. Roy Cooper (D). The Democrats say in their lawsuit that the law was one of several efforts aimed at making it harder for people “they perceive ...
