House Judiciary Democrats plan to introduce legislation that would move the federal agency tasked with protecting federal judges out of the Justice Department and into the judicial branch, amid rising threats against judges and concerns about the independence of the courts.
The legislation, announced Thursday, would establish the US Marshals Service as a bureau within the judicial branch of government. The Supreme Court’s chief justice would select, in consultation with a board, the director of the Marshals Service and US Marshals who serve in individual judicial districts.
