President Donald Trump’s pardons for participants in the Jan. 6 riot at the US Capitol won’t change “the truth of what happened” that day, two Washington federal judges wrote in early responses from the judiciary to the sweeping order.

The records created in these cases “must stand, unmoved by political winds, as a testament and as a warning,” Judge Tanya Chutkan of the US District Court for the District of Columbia said in a Wednesday order dismissing charges against John Banuelos, who allegedly fired a gun from the Capitol scaffolding.
