Conversion Therapy Ban, Redistricting Lead High Court Calendar

A challenge to Colorado’s conversion therapy ban will top the US Supreme Court’s arguments in October, marking the latest culture-war clash the justices have agreed to take up.

On Oct. 7, the justices will consider whether the state law banning mental health counselors from attempting to change a minor’s sexual orientation or gender identity violates free speech rights, the court announced on Tuesday, releasing its argument calendars for both October and November.

The case, Chiles v. Salazar, is one of a string of LGBTQ-related cases the justices have considered in recent terms.

Last term, the justices upheld a Tennessee law that banned certain medical treatment for transgender minors and required parental opt-outs from public school curriculum involving LGBTQ-friendly books. In the upcoming term, the justices are also set to consider whether states can ban or restrict transgender athletes from participating on school sports teams. The justices haven’t yet scheduled that case, West Virginia v. B.P.J., for argument.

The justices also said they will hear a high-profile challenge to Louisiana’s congressional map on Oct. 15. The high court already heard the redistricting case, Louisiana v. Callais, earlier this year, but set the case for reargument to consider outlawing the use of race to intentionally create majority-minority voting districts intended to boost minority voting power.

The case sets up a potential blockbuster that could have major implications for both federal and state elections.

The cases are Chiles v. Salazar, U.S., No. 24-539, to be argued 10/7/25 and Louisiana v. Callais, U.S., No. 24-109, to be argued 10/15/25.
