Conservative Journal Enjoined From Calling Itself ‘IJ’

An online conservative journal was barred from using the initials “IJ” after a conservative law firm and advocacy group obtained a preliminary injunction through a Nov. 30 ruling by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia (Inst. for Justice v. Media Grp. of Am., LLC, E.D. Va., 1:15-cv-01410-LO-JFA, 11/30/15).

The court found that the Institute for Justice held common law trademark rights in the initials “IJ,” and that its services were similar enough to that of the conservative news website “IJ Review” to justify blocking the latter from rebranding itself just as “IJ.”
