Compounding Pharmacy Employees’ Drug Law Convictions Stand

Three employees of a Massachusetts compounding pharmacy that was responsible for a deadly fungal meningitis outbreak in 2012 are facing prison sentences for violating the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act’s provisions prohibiting drug misbranding and distributing adulterated drugs.

Alla Stepanets, Gene Svirskiy, and Christopher Leary are former employees of New England Compounding Center. They weren’t accused of playing any role in compounding the drugs alleged to have caused the meningitis outbreak, but the federal investigation of that incident led to their indictments on unrelated crimes.

Pharmacies sometimes receive bogus prescriptions for fictional or famous people, according to the court. ...
