Riding momentum from Vermont’s historic “climate superfund” law, a handful of newly emboldened states are planning to drive through legislation to charge fossil fuel companies for climate change damage.
New York’s own Climate Change Superfund Act passed both chambers and is now in the hands of the governor, who has until the end of this year to sign. A similar California bill is still live in the state’s session ending Aug. 31.
Meanwhile, lawmakers from Maryland and Massachusetts are reassessing how to pass their own “polluter pays” bills next year after the legislation failed the first time.
