Cities Face ‘Impossible’ Deadline to Remove Lead Pipes (2)

Many cities scrambling to meet an October deadline to inventory all their lead drinking water pipes worry about whether they’ll be able to meet the EPA’s next proposed mandate: full replacement of those pipes within 10 years.

“For us, complete removal in 10 years seems impossible in our service area,” said Michael Saia, spokesman for the Charleston Water System in Charleston, S.C., which has an estimated 6,100 lead water pipes. “The cost is too great to bear for our utility and our customers.”
