A faith-based homeless shelter in Anchorage, Alaska that limits overnight stays to people who were determined to be female at birth won an order temporarily blocking enforcement of municipal non-discrimination ordinances.
The contested ordinances, which prohibit discrimination in public accommodations based on sex or gender identity, don’t apply to homeless shelters, the District of Alaska said. Therefore, the Downtown Soup Kitchen, d/b/a Downtown Hope Center, likely will succeed on its challenge.
Absent a preliminary injunction, Hope Center also would likely suffer irreparable harm resulting from restrictions on its ability to provide overnight living space to homeless persons, the court said. ...
