California Supreme Court Justice Cuéllar Leaving for Think Tank

California Supreme Court Justice Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar is leaving the bench after seven years to become president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Cuéllar’s planned departure gives Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) his second appointment to the state high court, where five of seven justices were named by Democrats. Newsom last year named Associate Justice Martin Jenkins, a former judge on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California and California Court of Appeal, to the court.
