California Supreme Court Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye announced Wednesday she will not seek re-election in the November.
Cantil-Sakauye, who identifies herself as a Asian-Filipina American, was the first person of color and second woman to serve as the state’s chief justice. She will step down Jan. 1, 2023, closing out a 12-year term.
“I have said before that I hold my office in trust until it is time for the next leaders to protect and expand access to justice—that time is now,” Cantil-Sakauye said in a statement provided by the court’s press office.
