A California nonprofit health-care provider stopped the state’s Medicaid program from ending its contract to provide care for people living with HIV and AIDS before litigation over its First Amendment retaliation claims plays out.
The California Department of Health Care Services and its Director Michelle Baass planned to allow the AIDS Healthcare Foundation’s contract to expire Dec. 31—a move the provider said was prompted by a letter it sent to its members in 2021, warning them that it would have to shut down unless the department increased its funding.
