California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed legislation on Friday that would place privacy restrictions on video footage captured by in-vehicle cameras.
The bill, (S.B. 296) authored by state Sen. Bill Dodd (D), was spurred by concern over drivers being surveilled without their knowledge. Most prominently, there were allegations that workers for Tesla had shared images and videos recorded by customers’ cars. The vehicle manufacturer was sued earlier this year over such alleged violations.
