Texas lawyer William “Bill” Ramey and Silent Communications LLC must jointly cover BlackBerry Corp.‘s attorneys fees after filing a patent infringement lawsuit in bad faith and not conducting an adequate pre-filing investigation into the protected method’s ownership.

Ramey, namesake of the prolific patent suit filing firm Ramey LLP, failed to adequately look into whether his client had the right to assert the patent, even though the attorney has been warned in the past about the need to do so before filing an infringement suit, Judge Alan Albright held Tuesday.
