BGOV OnPoint: Shutdown Nears for Homeland Security Department

The immigration enforcement debate in Congress is imperiling funding for Homeland Security agencies set to expire Feb. 13 absent a bipartisan deal or short-term extension.

Democrats are demanding policy changes to immigration enforcement, including requiring agents to obtain judicial warrants and ending the use of face masks, to help get a DHS funding bill the 60 votes it needs to pass the Senate.

If lawmakers can’t come to agreement on a full-year bill or short-term extension by Friday, other Homeland agencies would be caught in the crosshairs. ICE and CBP can continue operating with other money provided in Republicans’ 2025 ...
