Health-care providers couldn’t deny organ transplants to individuals solely because they have a disability under H.R. 2706, which would also aim to bolster enforcement of disability discrimination laws.

Although existing laws prohibit organ transplant centers from discriminating based on disability status, there’s “limited enforcement and a lack of federal guidance to ensure patients are protected,” according to the House Energy and Commerce Committee report on the measure.

Rep. Kat Cammack (R-Fla.), the bill’s sponsor, said a young child with Down syndrome in her district was denied a heart transplant and died as a result in 2021.
