Baker McKenzie, Paul Hastings Scoop Skadden Lawyers

Aug. 19, 2019, 3:06 PM

Baker McKenzie has brought aboard mergers and acquisitions lawyer Leif King in Palo Alto as part of a continuing expansion of its transaction practice in Silicon Valley and globally.

King had headed the corporate and M&A practice at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom in its Silicon Valley office and developed expertise in handling M&A matters for the technology industry.

Also departing Skadden is capital markets lawyer Jonathan Ko, who is joining Paul Hastings as a partner in Los Angeles. Paul Hastings has been adding corporate partners in London, New York, the Bay Area and Latin America.

Baker McKenzie said King’s hiring underscored its commitment to M&A.

“Leif’s expertise will enhance our existing team’s cross-border and post-acquisition capabilities for current and future clients, and will enable us to provide a more robust level of services throughout the deal lifecycle,” Colin Murray, the firm’s North American CEO, said in a statement.

Baker McKenzie has added several transactional hires in recent months. They include life sciences lawyers Randy Sunberg and Denis Segota, and M&A lawyer Mark Mandel in New York, as well as three other attorneys in London, as part of the firm’s strategy to grow its transactional practice in key global money and business centers.

In California, the firm also hired securities litigators Perrie Weiner and Ed Totino from DLA Piper to work in Los Angeles.
