Apple, Google Say App Gambling Suits Barred by Internet Shield

Apple Inc. and Alphabet Inc.'s Google told a California federal judge that the Communications Decency Act bars consumer suits alleging that they profit from unlawful third-party casino-style game apps.

At issue are “social casino” games such as slots, poker, and blackjack. The games allow users to purchase virtual currency to play for the chance to win more playing time, which consumers say is unlawful under various state laws.

Google and Apple take up to 30% of the revenue generated from in-game sales on apps downloaded from the Google Play Store and App Store, the lawsuits say.
