The Trump administration can’t require Chicago and St. Paul, Minn., to certify compliance with anti-sanctuary and anti-diversity, equity, and inclusion conditions in order to get federal public safety funds for now, a federal judge found Thursday.
Judge Jorge Alonso of the Northern District of Illinois barred enforcement of the grant conditions while the case pends, saying the conditions aren’t connected to the stated purpose of the funding and that the administration likely violated Constitutional separation-of-powers principles.
