The Justice Department is calling on the US Sentencing Commission to create new guidelines for boosting sentences when criminals use AI to commit or cover-up misconduct.
In annual policy recommendations for the commission that appeared this week on a department webpage, DOJ’s Criminal Division asked for a specific new enhancement leading to stiffer punishments when defendants relied on artificial intelligence “during the commission of an offense, in preparation for the offense, or in an attempt to avoid apprehension for the offense.”
