Abortion Medication Minefield Causing Pharmacists Confusion (1)

Some pharmacists are hesitating to dispense abortion-inducing drugs that can be used for other legal medical reasons as states outlaw or restrict abortions.

The US Supreme Court blocked a Texas federal judge’s restrictions on mifepristone, a drug widely used as an abortion pill, from taking immediate effect. But the medication can also be prescribed for Type 2 diabetes in patients with Cushing’s syndrome. Other medications that can be used in abortions—misoprostol and methotrexate—also have other uses, leading to confusion among pharmacists about whether they can fill prescriptions for the drugs without violating the law.
