The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers must revamp its compliance functions, and should do so immediately—before any new generic top-level domain names become operational, ICANN’s WHOIS policy review team urged in its final report, published May 11.
The report builds on the team’s preliminary findings, published in December (16 ECLR 2048, 12/14/11). ICANN tasked the team with reviewing the effectiveness of its WHOIS policy, and whether it meets legitimate law enforcement needs and promotes consumer trust, pursuant to its Affirmation of Commitments with the Department of Commerce.
