Vimeo Employees Unaware of Copyright Infringement, Court Says

Capitol Records LLC, Virgin Records America Inc., and other companies lost a bid for summary judgment in a copyright infringement case involving videos uploaded to Vimeo.com, according to a federal court ruling in New York.

Several record and music publishing companies sued Vimeo LLC in 2009. Although Vimeo’s employees commented on, and in some cases promoted, some of the videos uploaded by the website’s users, that doesn’t mean they were aware of their infringing material, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York said.

Judge Ronnie Abrams partly granted the company’s motion for summary judgment.
