The Department of Veteran Affairs has shelled out $5.5 billion over the last five years on a troubled electronic health records system contract.
The agency enhanced its commitment to the Oracle-Cerner contract as it moved forward. Spending on it has increased by more than 300% since its inception in fiscal 2018. Some members of Congress want it nixed.
What began as a $487 million outlay in fiscal 2018, grew to nearly $2 billion last fiscal year. Spending hovered around $1 billion annually in fiscal 2020 and 2021, according to Bloomberg Government data.
