Utah Governor Signs Bill Opting State Out of Net Gambling if Feds Allow It

DENVER—Utah Gov. Gary R. Herbert (R) signed a bill (H.B. 108) March 19 providing for the state to “opt out” of Internet gambling if Congress passes a law legalizing it.

House Bill 108 would specifically outlaw Internet gambling in Utah although the state already has a ban on all forms of gambling.

Rep. Stephen E. Sandstrom (R), chief sponsor of the legislation, told BNA the governor “realized the negative impact gambling would have on our state” economically and socially.

“I’m proud of the fact we are one of only two states that has no form of gambling whatsoever,” he said. ...
