The Federal Communications Commission will vote on a new rule to bar companies from connecting submarine communication cables to America that include any Chinese technology or equipment, FCC chair Brendan Carr tells the Financial Times.
- Carr and two Democrats serving on the commission are expected to approve the rule on Aug. 7
- Chinese companies will be unable to secure FCC licenses to build or operate cables that connect to the US
- Will also be banned from leasing capacity on cables laid by other companies
- New rule will only apply to licenses for future cables
