U.K. ICO Calls on Cos. to Tackle Adtech Sector Privacy Risks

The U.K.’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) sets out expected data protection standards that companies “must meet to safeguard people’s privacy online” when developing new advertising technologies, according to a website statement.

  • Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham says the ICO found that companies are collecting and sharing a person’s information “with hundreds, if not thousands of companies”, about what that person is doing online in order to show targeted ads or content
    • Most of the time, individuals are not aware that this is happening or have not given their explicit consent and “this must change”
