Trump Tariffs Could Hamper U.S. 5G Rollout

President Donald Trump’s trade war with China may hinder one of his administration’s priorities: launching and expanding next-generation 5G wireless networks.

Telecom companies are worried that U.S. tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods will hike the prices of many parts that carriers need to build the networks, which promise ultra-fast speeds to support the internet of things.

“These latest duties threaten to raise the cost of 5G infrastructure in the U.S. by hundreds of millions of dollars,” Nokia Corp. said in a recent Federal Communications Commission filing.
