Service Providers Push ‘German Cloud’ Compliant With Data Protection Laws

BERLIN—The German internet industry is pushing to create a “German Cloud,” where customer data are held exclusively in data centers within Germany and subject to strict German data protection laws.

The move is an attempt to win over German small and medium sized businesses (SMEs), which remain hesitant to make the leap to cloud computing, analysts recently told BNA.

In September 2011, German state data protection authorities released a cloud computing guidance document that recommended that businesses not store sensitive data in cloud servers located outside the European Union, a proposal that attorneys told BNA at the time was “onerous.” ...
