Reddit Feb. 7 banned face-swapped photos and videos known as “deepfakes” on its social media site amid growing concern over how an artificial intelligence tool has been used to generate explicit videos.
The software technology allows people to superimpose a person’s face—often without his or her authorization—on another’s body. Among its most infamous uses: swapping one person’s face for another’s in porn videos.
Deepfakes have been proliferating on various social media sites, often with celebrities’ images, potentially triggering legal and ethical debates surrounding privacy, fake news and copyrights.
