OpenAI Seeks NYT’s Prompts, Consultant Deposition in AI Lawsuit

OpenAI Inc. urged a federal judge to allow it to depose the New York Times Co.'s expert consultant who worked on an exhibit in its complaint showing how ChatGPT produced outputs that copied the newspaper’s articles.

OpenAI also asked Judge Ona T. Wang, who is overseeing the consolidated case against it involving the Times and several other media outlets over its large language models, to order the plaintiffs to produce the ChatGPT prompts and outputs used to create the Times’ Exhibit J in an opposition filing Tuesday in US District Court for the Southern District of New York.
