Self-driving truck makers are getting a big leg-up from the government.
The U.S. Transportation Department will no longer assume that a commercial vehicle driver is human, opening the door for more changes that could proliferate self-driving trucks in the U.S. An artificial intelligence system now could be a “driver,” Ryan Beene reports.
The change is part of “Automated Vehicles 3.0,” the department’s policy guidance update on the self-driving vehicle industry. The update also creates a new pilot program for testing and calls for a voluntary data exchange among companies and the public sector, Shaun Courtney reports.
