New Jersey’s News Media Shield Law Extends to County Watchdog Blogger

New Jersey’s broad news media shield law applied to a blogger digging into the inappropriate use of government generators by local county officials during Hurricane Sandy, the New Jersey Superior Court of Union County ruled April 12. (In re January 11, 2013, Subpoena by the Grand Jury of Union County New Jersey, N.J. Super. Ct., 13-0001, 4/12/13).

The state’s “Newspaperman’s Privilege” is broad and flexible, Judge Karen M. Cassidy ruled, and there was no case law requiring that the law’s protection be withheld from an author of newsworthy posts simply because she at times posted information that was not newsworthy.
