Meta Fights Public Nuisance Claims in New Mexico Bench Trial

Meta Platforms Inc. urged a New Mexico judge Monday to not side with the state attorney general’s public nuisance theory of liability, which could force it to pay billions to remedy its youth user safety policies.

Meta made its case against an injunction restructuring its policies during opening arguments of a bench trial that serves as the second part in the state’s lawsuit against the social-media giant. A potential injunction could cost Meta roughly $3.7 billion over the course of 15 years in the form of providing mental health services and new guardrails to its platforms.
