An individual who sold a service that enabled customers to bypass craigslist’s CAPTCHA and phone verification systems to automatically post ads in multiple categories is liable for bypassing those technical access controls, violating craigslist’s terms of use, and accessing craigslist without authorization, among many other wrongs, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California ruled Aug. 2 (Craigslist Inc. v. Kerbel, N.D. Cal., 3:11-cv-03309-EMC, 8/2/12).
Judge Edward M. Chen granted craigslist’s motion for default, looking to several cases against similar services, chiefly Craigslist Inc. v. Naturemarket Inc.,
