Ligado Wins Approval for Airwaves Plan U.S. Military Opposes (1)

Federal regulators approved a plan by Ligado Networks LLC for a mobile broadband network despite objections from the U.S. Defense Department, which says the service threatens to interfere with military GPS operations.

All five members of the Federal Communications Commission voted for the proposal that would open more airwaves for fast 5G networks, the agency said in a news release Monday.

The proposal emerged even though the Defense and Transportation Departments in a joint statement on Friday said they, as well as nearly a dozen federal agencies, were “strongly opposed” to Ligado’s proposal over concern it would foul GPS signals. ...
