HILL TECH & CYBER BRIEFING: GOP FTC Slot Opens on Phillips Exit

On Friday, Federal Trade Commissioner Noah Phillips stepped down from his position, taking the five-member commission down to four, with three Democrats and one Republican.

Serving on the antitrust and consumer protection agency since 2018, Phillips has butted heads with FTC Chair Lina Khan, voting against many issues she has made a priority.

President Joe Biden will select Phillips’ successor, though the president generally defers to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to suggest candidates to fill the Republican vacancy.
