Google Will End Online Censorship Practices In China, Redirect Visitors to Hong Kong Site

Google Inc. announced March 22 that it is shutting down its China-based website in the wake of a dispute with the Chinese government over censorship issues.

Users visiting Google.cn are now being redirected to an uncensored website, Google.com.hk, operated in Hong Kong, outside of mainland China, according to a blog post written by David Drummond, Google’s chief legal officer.

“We believe this new approach of providing uncensored search in simplified Chinese from Google.com.hk is a sensible solution to the challenges we’ve faced—it’s entirely legal and will meaningfully increase access to information for people in China,” Drummond said. “We very much ...
