Google announced this morning that it has entered an agreement to acquire Motorola Mobility in a deal valued at $12.5 billion. The online search giant says the purchase will allow it to supercharge its Android ecosystem, of which Motorola Mobility is already a partner.
Boards of directors for both companies have already approved the deal, in which Google will purchase Motorola Mobility for $40 per share in cash.
Motorola Mobility will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open. Google will run Motorola Mobility as a separate business.
