Google Settles German Probe After Opening Up Maps to Rivals

Google agreed to drop terms that restricted the use of its maps platform by rivals and opened its Automotive Services product, the German Federal Cartel Office said.

  • Google has allowed the use of its maps services to be combined with those of other providers, such as HERE, Mapbox or TomTom.
  • Its contents can now also be displayed on third-party platforms, including OpenStreetMap maps
  • The settlement brings to an end an antitrust probe that started in 2023 under broader powers given to the German watchdog to tackle Big Tech’s dominance
