Ghana Wireless Firm Moves to Absorb Troubled Rival’s Subscribers

Telecel, Ghana’s second-largest telecommunications company, is looking to solidify its position by taking on 3 million customers from a distressed state-run competitor.

The operator has started a government-mandated “rescue mission” to absorb AT Ghana’s subscribers as the carrier grapples with financial challenges, Telecel Group Chief Executive Officer Moh Damush said in an interview last week from London.

The move, aimed at keeping millions of users connected, could also boost Telecel’s subscriber base by as much as 42%, propelling the operator from 7.8 million subscribers to 11 million and strengthening its No. 2 position, data from the communications regulator shows. ...
