Finland Seizes Ship Suspected of Damaging Subsea Cable (1)

Finnish authorities took control of a vessel suspected of causing damage to a telecommunications cable, launching a criminal investigation into the latest reported incident affecting subsea links in the Baltic Sea.

The Finnish Border Guard intercepted the ship Wednesday after Elisa Oyj detected a fault in a cable between Helsinki and Tallinn, Estonia, early that morning, the police said in a statement.

Police took into custody 14 crew members, including citizens of Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, and are in contact with the ship’s flag state, according to a report from state-owned broadcaster YLE.
